School Food Punishment
“What the..?” you might think. Japan does have a lot of weird things… However, this is the name of a Japanese band I will now introduce you to. School Food Punishment is a new indie band and not a mainstream famous one. But their music is interesting and noticeable: electronic, spacy, sprinkled with some pop and rock elements for good measure. I can only suggest that you to try to listen to them..!
School Food Punishment was formed in 2004 and is in fact still a very young band. Their first mini album was released in 2007 “School food is good food” followed by their second mini album “Air feel, color swim” in the winter. Their newest mini album “Riff-rain” was released last year, still keeping their characteristic sound.
The main focus in School Food Punishment’s sound is on the vocalist Yumi Uchimura‘s soft voice, and the interesting piano work of Masayuki Hasuo. The mix of these elements creates a somehow space-like atmosphere – the vocals has been “echo-ed” in some songs, which complements the music a lot. Through all their songs they keep this flowy, harmonic feeling which makes the music really relaxing – even the more funky tracks.
“Feedback” is from their newest mini album. It is only their third PV, but this PV reflects School Food Punishment’s music in both sound and video pretty good I would say. The movements in slowmotion in the verse to sudden movement when the chorus comes, functions really good together with the music, creating the sound and atmosphere characterizing this band.
“You May Crawl” is from their second mini album. It is very characteristic that it breaks from the funky main-beat to only vocals and keyboards, when presenting the chorus for the first time. Later on it “builds up” and the chorus becomes more powerful.
If I were to describe the band in one word, somehow the word “futuristic” pops up. They got some style and interesting elements, which I personally think can gain them more popularity in the future.
Enjoy some nice music and please feel free to comment..!
