Bento – Authentic Japanese
This month, on the same road as Tea restaurant, I found this amazing authentic Japanese restaurant. Bento is owned by a Japanese family and the staff are all family members. A good friend of mine told me about it when discussing where to go to get authentic Japanese food in Copenhagen.
During the last 2 decades, Japanese food has become fashionable. So right now it is hip to eat Japanese food – and by Japanese food most people mean sushi. This ravenous hunger for sushi has resulted in more and more sushi take-away’s and restaurants, scattered around Copenhagen. Even though more and more Japanese food places become available in Copenhagen, only a few of them are authentic – many have Chinese or European owners. As it has turned into this hip thing, the prize for eating Japanese is now well above what most students can afford. So why not find the best place to eat sushi, using a poor student’s hard earned money?
From the outside the restaurant does not look all that appealing, maybe because it is located in a basement. But as soon as you enter the restaurant, you get a feeling of coming home. The decoration of the place is simple, yet extremely cozy.
A native Japanese waiter showed us to our seats and handed out hot towels, which is typical for dinning in Asian countries. The towels are meant to wash the dirt off your hands and face. The menu was overwhelming – not only do they have a broad selection of sushi, they also have plenty of vegetarian and Japanese dishes. There is definitely more than sushi to the Japanese cuisine. We decided to order a sushi
menu for 3 persons, and Japanese beer for the meal. While we waited for the meal, they served tea and edamame beans as an appetizer. If you are interested in the sushi-making process you can see the Japanese chef making sushi in the open part of the kitchen. The 35 pieces of sushi is plated significantly on a typical Japanese plate. The menu we ordered included nigiri’s, salmon, tuna, sweet shrimp and tiger shrimp sushi’s. The taste was simply delicious! Oishii desu!
We enjoyed a lovely meal with extremely fresh sushi, the traditional Japanese miso soup (best miso soup I have ever had), tea, edamame beans and Japanese pop music in the background. The experience was definitely better than expected. The prize for 2 persons including something to drink was DKK 450,- but it is not even necessary to order anything to drink at all, and also we shared a menu meant for 3 persons instead of 2, which means that you get it cheaper if you eat like an average grown-up.
As this month’s bonus, every ASP students who print out this article can get a welcome drink – Japanese plum wine – for free when dinning at Bento. The verdict on this restaurant – it is sooo worth trying – even though it’s a little expensive – but that’s how sushi is in Copenhagen.
